The Jammu and Kashmir tourism department opened the hotel, called Yatri Niwas, in order to give tourists the opportunity to get out of the cold in an area which usually offers only camping facilities, newKerala.com reports.
State tourism minister Muhammed Dilawar said that students would be given a concession of 50 per cent for accommodation at the hotel, which can accommodate up to 1400 people.
Managing director of the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation Abdul Aziz Wani remarked: "It is a very good place for tourists with low budgets."
Pahalgam lies in the foothills of the Himalayas and is popular with independent travellers. The news is likely to increase demand for flights to India.
