Ajaccio
Corsica (Corsican: Corsica, French: Corse) is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, located roughly west of Italy, south-east of France and north of Sardinia (Italy), and currently governed as a part of the French Republic.
Bastia
Located on the northeast coast of Corsica, Bastia was founded in 1380 by the Genoese, who built a fortress to protect it, and Bastia was the capital of Corsica until 1791. The town has several beautiful churches, including the San Giovanni Battiste with its classical facades. The old quarter of the town, known as the Terra Vechhia has many small, winding streets, Baroque churches and is spectacularly set against the maquis-covered hills. Terra Nova is situated on the opposite side of the old port, and is a very tidy, plush area with many cafes, bars and restaurants. The Nouveau Port, created in 1862 to cope with the increasing traffic with France and Italy, became the mainstay of the local economy, and Bastia is now a large commercial centre.
Calvi (Corsica)
This beautiful, wild playground is the ultimate combination holiday destination - physical exertion in the elements by day, French wine and cuisine by night. Corsica has been French for only 200 of its 4000 year history, and has many traditions - gastronomic, musical and cultural. It is beautiful, wild, rugged, unspoilt and a touch old-fashioned. There are numerous hotels, bars, cafes and restaurants, and plenty of shopping to do too. But with its warm climate and clear blue sea, there's nothing better to do than simply relax in the sun.
Chambery
Beautiful Chambery is situated near to some of the most popular ski resorts in Europe, including excellent resorts such as La Plagne, Meribel, Les Arcs and Val d'Isere. The town itself is pretty located in between lakes and mountains. It is a very picturesque place and it is home to the imposing former residence of the Counts and Dukes of Savioe. The old town is largely pedestrianised so it is the perfect place to wander around one afternoon as there is some magnificent contemporary architecture to see, including the Andre Malraux cultural centre and the Manege Congress Centre. Just outside Chambery is a large area of stunning countryside ad he Vanoise National Park is within easy reach so there is plenty to see and do alongside the ski resorts.
Figari
The South eastern area of Corsica is easily accessible from Figari airport with its glorious bays of white sand and crystal blue waters, sophisticated resorts with a hint of Italian flair and breathtaking harbour towns. Figari town itself is a small, typically Corsican village, though its excellent location to nearby Figari International Airport has placed it firmly on the map. The streets of the village offer a simple selection of restaurants, street cafés and shops.
Grenoble
Grenoble has quickly become an industrial centre and is situated on the Isere River, surrounded by three ranges of the Alps. This picturesque location has undergone dramatic growth in the past century and hosted the Olympic Games in 1968. There are many historical and cultural sights: the university dates back to 14th century and a cableway leads to panorama from the 16th century Bastille fort. Museums worth visiting include the Musee de Grenoble, a renowned fine arts museum, and there are many other museums dedicated to regional history and art, French Resistance movement and natural history. There are several interesting and beautiful churches and the Alpine region around Grenoble features hiking trails, good quality ski resorts and caves.
Lyon
Vieux Lyon is the most famous and frequently visited area of the town. Historical sights include the Palais Episcopal Saint Jean and the Cathedral Saint Jean. There are also many townhouses dating from the middle ages and the Renaissance. The city is divided into quarters and it is worth getting a guide book to help you find your way around. Fans of architecture will be amazed at the paved alleys and the traboues which lead to the interior courtyards of the townhouses. And those fond of archaeology will be interested in the remains of the primitive cathedral in the Jardin archeologique situated at the north side of the present day sanctuary. Vieux Lyon (old Lyon) has a quaint charm with its many boutiques, cafes and bars to help to relax as you make your way round the many sights in this amazing place.
Montpellier
Montpellier, which is only a few kilometres from the Mediterranean, is one of the fastest growing cities in the south Of France. An ancient city with a large student population; it is lively and exuberant. 'The Place de la Comedie' is the main area where 'it happens' with its thriving cafe culture and street performers. The City has many impressive buildings including its opera house which is a 19th Century replica of the of the one in Paris. The City also boasts the oldest botanical garden in France as well as many interesting museums.
Nantes
Nantes is the capital of the 'Pays De La Loire' region of Western France. The City is located close to the Atlantic and therefore developed as one of France's main ports, although now much of its maritime activity has moved down the estuary on which it is situated. The City has still become the Metropolitan centre for Western France. Events that you can enjoy in the region include a colourful carnival in April, a world renowned music festival in June as well as being the site for major sporting events including international rugby matches.
Nice
A popular holiday destination in the summer months, Nice offers beaches, water sports, great nightlife, pretty markets, shops, cafes and mouth-watering food. Its worth taking the time to discover Nice in depth : wander at random through the narrow streets of the old town and then stroll along the famous Promenade before entering into the heart of the city with its rich architectural and cultural heritage and its parks and gardens. Nice has a total of 19 museums and galleries, 32 classified historical monuments and 300 ha of parks and gardens, woodland and green areas in addition to 150 ornamental lakes and fountains. It's also worth hiring a car as Cannes and Monaco aren't far away. The Rue de France pedestrian shopping street runs from the end of the Place Massena, roughly parallel to the seaside. This area is full of shops, including some exclusive clothing boutiques, and restaurants and cafés with outdoor terraces - a great place to sit and watch the world go by, while you eat or drink.
Toulouse
In just a few years, Toulouse made a name for itself as a hive of economic activity. Aeronautics, space, electronics, information technology and biotechnology are the key words for this big city that has forged a major reputation for itself. Toulouse is incredibly proud of its heritage, and no wonder. Its cultural life can suit both the cultural elite and the amateur. There are many galleries and museums of all different varieties. Toulouse is extremely charming and picturesque and is the ideal place to spend the weekend. By day wander around the galleries and shops, sip a coffee at an outdoor café, and by night enjoy a candle-lit meal, completed by a drink in one of the local bars or nightclubs.
