Situated in the Platanias municipality, just 16 kilometres from Chania, Maleme is a small town far less built up than its larger cousins, creating a sense of open space.
Maleme's beach is far less crowded than those at Gerani and Agia Marina, and with stunning views of the Rodopou peninsula, it is an excellent choice for walkers.
History enthusiasts will also find Maleme of great interest as the location from which German paratroopers invaded Crete in 1941 and also because of its Bronze-age late Minoan Thalos tomb.
