- Ierapetra offers the opportunity for visitors to lose themselves in its many charms.
The south-east coastal beach town of Ierapetra lies in the prefecture of Lasithi and with a population of almost 16,000 is known as the island's fourth city.
Formed in the Minoan period as the town of Hierapytna, Ierapetra was later conquered by the Romans in 67 BC, but prior to this had the distinction of being the last free city of Crete.
Modern Ierapetra consists of two main sectors - Kato Mera and Pano Mera, reflecting the historical and the contemporary respectively in terms of architecture.
Not to be missed while visiting the city is the Fortress of Kales, a Venetian construction dating from the early 17th century.
Another must see for history lovers is Napoleon's residence during his stopover in Crete, en route to Egypt.
