Benalmadena is split into two sections with Benalmadena Costa the part of most interest to the many tourists who visit this popular Costa del Sol resort every year. The resort lies 15km south west of Malaga airport between between the resorts of Fuengirola and Torremolinos. Benalmadena Costa is a purpose-built coastal resort extending 8km along the coast which climbs steeply up into mountains behind. The cable car from the coast up to the top of the mountain is a well worthwhile trip but not recommended for those with a fear of heights! The marina is the focal point and there is a great social scene around here, especially in summer months.

One of the resort's most pleasant features is the extended esplanade which follows the coast to reach the Marina of Caleta de Vélez which has over 200 berths and offers sailing and a variety of other watersports. Its lively cafés and restaurants also provide a good place in which to idle the time away, as well as enjoy excellent seafood.

Torremolinos is probably the most famous of the Costa del Sol resorts due to the fact that it was the first town in this area to be developed for tourism and it definitely lead the area's tourist boom of the 1950's and 1960's. The town can be thought of as two seperate sections: Torremolinos centre which was the first part to be developed; and the more attractive and more authentically Spanish area of La Carihuela to the west which is a charming area with many of the original fishermen's cottages still existing and pretty houses with bougainvillea covered patios. The seafront promenade, Paseo Maritimo, runs from Playamar along to La Carihuela, continuing as far as Benalmadena Marina. The walk from the centre of Torremolinos to La Carihuela is a pleasant one with lovely sea views and many excellent seafront fish restaurants along the way.
